9/30 Introductory Lecture – Role of San Francisco Hepatitis B Collaborative (SFHBC)
Speaker: Elective and Clinic Coordinators, SFHBC Board Members and Volunteers

Brief overview of SFHBC
Brief introduction of all the board members and faculty sponsors
Understand the different components of the elective
Understand the role and goals of SFHBC. How many people does the program impact?
Understand the different requirements of fulfilling the elective units (1 or 2 units)

10/28 Surgical Aspects of Hepatitis B Infection

11/4 Healthcare Provider's Guide to Chronic Hepatitis B

Provide clinical cases to first year students Introductory overview of interpreting hepatitis B serologic screening results
Introductory overview of follow-up and treatment for individuals with chronic hepatitis B (keep this simple for the first-year audience)

11/18 Navigating Language Barriers in Health Care
Speaker: Alicia Fernandez, MD

Time: 6-8 pm
Appreciate the challenges of working cross-culturally with populations using interpreters.
Learn how to be effective interpreters (if needed).
Provide active learning questions – help students to participate in discussion

11/25 Patient Education Interactive: Hepatitis B Interactive (Video)
Speaker: Stanford Asian Liver Center

Understand the social impact of Hepatitis B on the patient and their families

12/2 Last Day of Class “Who wants to be a millionaire?” Game
Speakers: Shirley Yan, Julia Zhu and other coordinators who can come
Room: HSW 300
Review some important topics that we covered throughout the quarter
Encourage participation (can give out some small prizes at the end)



Elective Requirements

FIRST OFF: NO EXAMS

1 Unit (FCM 170.13)
Attendance: one excused absence, one make-up absence*
Attend Navigating Language Barriers in Health Care Workshop 6-8 pm, Cole Hall.
(Make up for this 2 hour lecture would include attending 2 hours of Hepatitis B community outreach)
Attend Universal Precautions lecture

2 Units (FCM 170.13 + FCM 170.14)
Attendance: one excused absence, one make-up absence*
Attend 2 HepB clinics (can substitute 1 community outreach event)
Attend 2 clinical training sessions (dates listed below)

* Make-up involves looking through lecture presentation and answering a few multiple choice questions or attending a conference or outreach event involving Hepatitis B

Clinical Training (Phlebotomy and IM) Sessions: CHOOSE TWO
